Ben Expands Basic Unit
Leeds based electronic musician Ben England has been helped to
see the bigger picture of the music industry by his industry consultant.
Ben, who has written and produced many drum and bass tracks since
leaving University, moved into the city's Sponge Studios a couple
of years to concentrate on writing and producing new material
with his dance outfit, Basic Unit.
Ben had originally wanted to start his own label but soon realised
that the difficulties of effectively marketing and distributing
his own releases would prove too great.
"There were so many problems with running your own label,"
says Ben. "Particularly for me as I was coming into something
new. Understanding the marketing side and liasing with the distribution
companies who have so much control over what you can do just seemed
too difficult. This was where our industry consultant helped a
great deal - somebody who had a great deal of experience in the
industry and could help me see the bigger picture. He offered
the kind of advice I had not had before"
Ben's outfit is now signed to Flex Records who also act as managers.
He now plans to continue working on new material as well as completing
re-mixes for other artists and working with other musicians as
producer and engineer."
