Stemming
from a project with Lifeline in Huddersfield in 1999, working
with young people involved with substance abuse, we recognise
the power of music to articulate thoughts, hopes, feelings and
fears. This is especially true for young people at risk, who may
find themselves in difficult situations, vulnerable, disaffected
or otherwise disadvantaged.
The
Feelings & Meanings strand of our work is designed to provide
a fulfilling and rewarding experience for such young people. Working
in partnership with organisations such as the Rathbone Trust,
who provide alternative education and training for young people
nationally, the Youth Inclusion Programme, and locally, with LOCA
in Batley and Dewsbury, and the BASE in Barnsley, we have already
achieved a significant range of work.
Harnessing
the power of modern music technology, groups of young people have
created both lyrics and music to a growing repertoire of songs
covering a range of issues and subjects they feel concerned about.
These have been translated into CD tracks with the help of professional
musicians and workshop leaders, and the support of the professional
recording and engineering expertise of Beaumont Street Studios.
