Youth Music West Yorkshire
YOUTH
MUSIC PROJECTS at BSS consist of an expanding range of
workshops, projects and other opportunities for practical involvement
in music, open to young people (target ages 5-18) across West
Yorkshire and beyond. The emphasis is on creativity and originality.
Launched in autumn 2001 with the large scale Making Waves project,
which attracted substantial support from National Foundation for
Youth Music, our youth work across Kirklees, Calderdale, Wakefield
and Barnsley has met with great success and increasing demand.
The three strands of this £200K project form the basis of
our continuing programme:
- Ready2Burn - aimed at young bands
who are serious about their music, offering professional support
and advice
- Feelings & Meanings -
working with young people at risk, using music to develop personal
and other skills
- Community Music - a broad pattern
of practical music-making workshops and projects, aimed at the
younger (5-12) age group
Youth
Music Projects, through Making Waves, have already delivered a
host of music-making activity to young people. Examples include;
African drumming and songwriting workshops with more than 20 after
school and youth clubs across West Yorkshire; a scrap samba band
in Castleford; a music-theatre group writing their own show in
Brighouse; a large scale project with 8 Special schools in Kirklees
leading to a performance at McAlpine Stadium; projects with vulnerable
young people in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Wakefield creating
their own music on CD - plus, of course, many young bands helped
to produce a professionally recorded demo at Beaumont Street Studios.
We're always pleased to hear from groups and individuals interested
in joining the programme, or who have ideas for new projects.
